can you tell the difference in something by its sound?

That sound can be good or bad.

Panics sets in because I can’t see what happened.

But I heard the sound.

The very loud sound.

My mouth said it, and I wasn’t sure why.

I felt around my mouth with my good hand and …something felt different.

With things the way they were I had to choose between sitting there touching my face and going somewhere there might be a mirror to see if something was really wrong.

I had to know what had happened.

Broken, was all I could think.

They went hand-in-hand.  That sound and that end result.  SNAP and BROKEN.

I was scared.

There was no pain.

Nothing felt broken, but that didn’t mean anything.

I kept feeling my face.

Then I finally got to my husband.  I explained the sound and he looked at me carefully.

“Let me get the mirror.”

He left.  I sat in panic.

What would I see?  Was it broken?  Was it out of whack?

He returned and I looked.

And looked. And I looked.

Somewhere in my mouth a muscle loosened and it SNAPPED and my jaw went back into place. My face is still crooked and the left side of my face isn’t right. But my mouth opens much wider and more comfortably now.

It isn’t perfect by any means but I rejoiced that small triumph!!

Victory can come with a sound.

WOOHOO!!!! When I shattered my jaw 13 years ago, I experienced a much similar thing during recovery. About 6 months after the wires were gone and I could eat again, there was this loud POP! and suddenly, I could open my mouth a lot wider and more comfortably at that! 2 weeks later, I got feeling back in my lip (the nerve had been severed in the break).

I will continue to pray for you and hope you get many more victorious sounds!

    That’s amazing!

I had a similar thing happen to me after I’d severely sprained my ankle after falling off of a sidewalk (1. I know, talk about a minor injury, especially compared to what you’ve been through 2. I did indeed fall off of a sidewalk. Go me). It was swollen for nearly 6 months after the incident, and then one day, it made a horrible, disgusting cracking noise…

And felt amazing. It’s not bothered me since. Aren’t our bodies weird?

But again, congratulations! Progress! Yay! I hope for many more (positive) snaps in the future!

  34. Melissa Wardy July 18, 2010 at 11:48 PM #
