parent/teenager conferences

When Peter and I went to school there was no Netflix and Hulu. Xbox and Nintendo DS’s were off in the future. We were killing ourselves for a song on our mix tapes instead of the instant play on Spotify. We had dial up and one computer per house was a luxury.

It’s not hard to understand how it can be difficult to be a student in a world full of easy distractions and instant EVERYTHING.

It was so hard to make my parent understand my struggles as a teen because they were so unlike anything they had gone through. The same for my parents and grandparent. And their parents.

There will be that glorious moment when we get to gloat in the moment our son cries tears of frustration because HIS child isn’t “working to his full potential”.

There were these break-thru moments when the class’s needs were met by the student’s abilities.

It was so hard in moments to not yell for them to appreciate that my son is far more than test scores and projects could ever show.

How are they suppose to truly appreciate the unique and magnificent person he is and is growing into if everything they ever teach him comes from the cookie cuter How-To-Build-A-Good-Student kit?

He’s a young man torn between the things that are fun and the things forced on him.

I’m a mother torn between the things I know he’ll need to learn and the things so he can have the fun as he grows.
